As I release this episode on Monday, October 21, we are just over two weeks from Election Day. Now, I’m a leftist and if you’re listening to this, it’s likely that you at least lean left. And as often as I complain about the Democratic Party, I still usually go into my polling place and vote for Democrats down the line because Republican policies are abjectly terrible. But voting straight ticket does not complete your ballot. Some at-large races require picking multiple candidates, and school board races are officially non-partisan. Also, Indiana has an unusual system for appointing and retaining State Supreme Court justices - this year Hoosier voters are asked whether they would like to retain three of these jurists, as well as two Federal Court of Appeals judges. Lastly, the 2024 Indiana ballot contains a referendum on amending the state’s constitution to remove the Superintendent of Public Instruction from the gubernatorial line of succession.

How should a good lefty vote when you can’t rely on a D next to someone’s name? Today, I’ve got two guests to help us figure this out. First, communications director and Hoosier TikToker Corinne Straight will help take us through the judicial retention questions and the constitutional referendum, then Dr. Michael Shaffer, a professor of educational leadership at Ball State and public education advocate, will tell us what to look for in school board races.
